First Annual Labour-Management Community “Respect Awards” Raises Funds for Heart House Hospice
Larry McDonald, retired President of Teamsters Local 938 is pleased to announce their participation in a new and significant Fundraiser and Community Awards Banquet scheduled for May 6, 2010.
The “RESPECT Awards” (Recognition of Extraordinary Service through Perseverance and Exceptional Commitment to Teamwork) will be awarded to both union and management honorees that have contributed the most to strengthen the institution of labour management relations in 2009 in Peel.
A prestigious panel of community leaders in both the labour and business community, including Buzz Hargrove, Past President of the CAW, Lisa James, President of Environmental Advisory Group Inc., Rick Drennan, Managing Editor of the Mississauga Business Times, Peter R. Smith, Chairman of the Board of GO Transit, Sheila Smith, Partner, Ernst & Young LLP and labour lawyers Howard Goldblatt and Larry Bartuzzi will be judging the nominations in various categories. It is anticipated that over 500 will be in attendance for this exciting community gala. The goal is to honour and celebrate the tremendous synergy that is achieved when people work together to make Peel a work, live, play community second to none.
Co-Chair Larry McDonald, President of Teamsters Union Local 938 is pleased with the initial response to the concept of the awards project. “We believe that the time is right for an event that recognizes individuals and businesses who personify a strong business/labour relationship", said McDonald, "and we can’t think of a more deserving recipient of the funds that we hope to raise than Heart House Hospice. Our objective is to build the “RESPECT” Awards into a successful annual event as we help contribute to among other things, the new facility that is now on the drawing board for Heart House Hospice."

Local 938 Members Deliver Christmas Toys to Kids
When Purolator driver Kevin Dumont spent the Christmas holidays at Sick Kidís Hospital in Toronto three years ago with his sick daughter, he had no idea the impact of this experience would kickstart a new project to help hospitalized children in his home town of Sudbury see the holidays from a different perspective. With the full approval of the management team at Purolator Sudbury, Kevin challenged all of his fellow drivers to solicit toys from customers and others in the community who wanted to help make a difference at this important time of the year for children. After two years of playing Santa, the Purolator driver team, headed by Kevin have managed to gather a full truckload of toys that have lifted the spirits of bed-ridden children at the Sudbury Regional Hospital and brought a lot of smiles as well to the faces of nurses and other medical staff at the facility. Kudos to Kevin and Purolator Sudbury for a well planned initiative and for their caring attitude.
